Black Hairstyles: Crochet

Welcome back to another section of my black hairstyles series! This week I will be talking about one of my favorite styles to do: crochet. This is a style I started doing a couple of years ago and I can say every time I do crochet I always get compliments on how natural it looks. I usually wear it during the summer because I love the whole “black girl magic afro” look around that time of the year. Plus me being an avid wig person, bundles can be a little too much in Texas heat and crochet is a very light look. It doesn’t weigh down my head at all.

Crochet is cheap and fast. It takes me about an hour and a half maybe 2. The hair costs about $6-10 per packet and I only use 2 packets of the Luthress So Much Volume hair.

If you are doing Crochet do it right, please.

I already told yall I can’t do hair like that. I hold my own but I can’t do extravagant baby hair swoops on my units, I can’t passion twist, I can barely make my own wig. BUT if there is one thing I can do it’s crochet.

Dont:

  • Wear your crochet longer than it is intended for. I probably wear my crochet for about a good 3 weeks and that’s me pushing it. I have seen some females wear theirs as long as box braids and that’s fine but make sure you know how to maintain it.
  • ignore the frizz. However, you wear your crochet it will naturally start to fizz up and that’s where your pair of scissors will come into play. If you ignore it..well that’s on you.

Do:

  • Try to blend in the crochet hair with your natural hair texture. This will give your hair a more realistic look. But hey kinky curly is not the only thing you can do with the hair of course–just my preference. There are crochet braids, locs, you name it. I’m actually thinking about doing crochet faux locs next time.
  • I would recommend if your more novice with hair like me than you should try starting off with crochet color that matches your own hair color. Then once you get more comfortable with crochet you can try different colors and different techniques of blending.
  • Try to be as expressive as possible with your crochet. Remember your hair is your form of expression, and if there is something you have always wanted to try, try it.
