Jennifer Coolidge stealing the show on White Lotus

HBO: The White Lotus

Welcome back guys! Award season is long and gone and I’ve had some downtime lately to catch up on some of these new series out right now. One in particularly has definitely caught my attention. The White Lotus is an extremely unique yet weird TV concept that I love. There was some new faces, but what really caught my attention was some faces I recognized very well. Michael Imperioli from The Sopranos, Theo James from Divergent and of course in my opinion the star of the show Jennifer Coolidge from Legally Blonde and American Pie.

White Lotus perfectly showcases Rich people ennui

The amount of issues a lot of the characters face on vacation are inherently related to the social hierarchy the show actually pokes on. This show makes sure to showcase this isn’t a vacation meant to be rejuvenating. But a show meant to capture white privilege ennui through satiric comedy and tragedy. While its very interesting to watch the dynamics of the vacationers on the show, I think what really captivates me is the staff members and locals of the community. I love that the show gives them a sense of life here and follow a similar theme in both seasons: class divide. The show makes you empathize with the people that constantly have to cater and feed the riches ego.

Tanya McQuoid is perfectly Flawed and Human

Mrs. Coolidge embodies this role so inherently well: rich white lady with layers of insecurities and mommy issues. You feel sorry for her because a part of you can relate to her at the same time. I think her speech with Greg (potential suitor) while lifting her mother’s ashes saying” This is the core to my onion” was golden and solidified her ability to play up the dramatics. Still despite this we don’t forget Tanya’s still a rich white women when we see how she takes advantage of Belinda as her emotional support punching bag. She dumps all her trauma on her then promises her something that could change her life and snatches it away and leaves. Absolutely brutal. However, made her such a memorable character that will live long in television history.

For a while it seemed Mrs. Coolidge was stuck in the world of romanic comedies but Mike White (creator) saw potential and gave her a chance to do something different. She is definitely a character I am going to miss. But despite her rather dramatic show exit I already cant wait for season 3.

Age is nothin but a number

I think 2022 really was a great period to show that actors definitely do not fizzle out as they get older examples being Michelle Yeoh and Ke Huy Quan from Everything Everywhere all at once.

Jennifer Coolidge talks a lot of how much this show has changed her social and physical life. She gives a tearful acknowledgment in one of her many acceptance speeches saying ” I am grateful to you all, cause this could be it.” She even acknowledges that this is a career high for her, which is pretty amazing at 61 years old. Anyways this was just a short rant on why I love the show and why I love her.

That’s it for the post. Had a lot of fun watching and writing about this series. Be on the lookout for more!
